Sir Andy Murray , who is a Unicef UK ambassador , received the knighthood for services to tennis and charity at Buckingham Palace . The Honours award are used to recognise merit in terms of achievement and service. The three-time Grand Slam champion was named in the Queen's New Years Honours in 2016 , following his second Wimbledon win and second Olympic gold. Sir Andy revealed in January that he planned to retire after this year's Wimbledon, forcing back tears as he told reporters at the Australian Open that his hip injury was going to bring a premature end to his glittering career. He had surgery in January and has since begun his rehabilitation.
